The Art of Calligraphy

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

First Picture with Grandma

Calligraphy has often been referred to as a “visual art” because of the grace and beauty it spreads across a note or page.  Over the years it has taken on various shapes and believe it or not, has evolved to our modern day cursive writing.

Various forms of calligraphy can be found in various font styles used in software programs including the Cricut Expression cartridges. Many scrapbook papers and embellishments also carry various forms of calligraphy as shown in this scrapbook page.  If we look around us, we’ll find this art form all around us…. wedding and event invitations, inscriptions, memorial documents, maps, graphic design and religious art.

Have you ever tried penning your own word or phrase using calligraphy?  It takes a bit of practice but once you’ve mastered it, you will have joined legions of artists who have brought joy through the beauty of their words.

National Days of …

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Yesterday marked National Scrapbooking Day and many scrap bookers were in total heaven with the many events taking place on the day.  But as the weekend progresses, we realized there were many “National” days of celebrations taking place aside from National Scrapbooking Day.

Some May 1st National Days…

May Day – In most countries, it is the celebration of spring and the coming of summer.

Loyalty Day – A day to reflect and appreciate the members and actions of our armed forces.  Also a day to reflect on our allegiance to our country and the principles of our forefathers.

Mother Goose Day – A day to appreciate nursery rhymes and stories.

Save the Rhino Day – Dedicated to saving the rhinoceros from extinction.

Some May 2nd National Days …

Babies Day – A day focused on … you guessed it … babies!  New parents are encouraged to spend time with their newborn to find out more about their developing habits and needs.  Parents-to-be are encouraged to learn more about their upcoming journey and how to care for their new arrival.

Brothers and Sisters Day – A day designed to express sibling love and affection.  Compound this with Babies Day and you’ll have a day full of family loving!

May also has dedicated “National Weeks” and has dedicated activities and foods to be enjoyed throughout the month.

So what’s the moral to this story?

Seek out those special days … whether they be “national” days or just an “every day”… and think about how they can be captured and saved with the art of scrapbooking.

We’d love to hear of any days you plan to capture!

May 1 – National Scrapbooking Day

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Tomorrow is National Scrapbooking Day — a day were droves of people will come together for a common cause … to collect and preserve memories.

When you stop to think of it, memories happen every moment of the day. And there are some memories that will always come back to you when you hear a certain song, or smell a familiar aroma, or use a particular saying. All memories would be impossible to capture in scrapbooking, but sit back and think of the ones that you will ALWAYS want to remember and share with family and friends.

Here are a few ideas of what you might want to do on the this national day of scrapping:

  • Find something “scrappy” to do!  Have a scrap party at your house, go to a local scrap gathering at your favorite supplies store or sign up for a scrapbook retreat.
  • Go online and find something new to do. Take time to learn something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time.
  • Organize your projects. Plan out the upcoming week and determine what projects you’ll work on.
  • Buy new stuff!  If you’ve gone through any of the above steps, you might need to stock up on supplies. Write up your list, check it twice and go shopping!
  • Reorganize your work space. We often leave this scattered around in the wake of creativity — look around your work area and put things back into place. While you’re at it, you just might find a better way of organizing your paper, embellishments or tools.
  • Make a Mother’s Day card or gift. A perfect time to think about that special card or gift to give to a special Mom.

The art of scrapbooking allows free expression of your creative abilities. Express yourself on National Scrapbooking Day … you just mind find that you’ll want to do it EVERY day!

Proviso West H.S. All Class Reunion

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Proviso West’s All Class Reunion was a great success thanks to the organizational efforts of George Roa – Class of 1996. The evening started with a beautiful food buffet offering a huge variety of things to choose from which was followed by a large dessert table. Our DJ, Ronald DiFiore – Class of 1977, provided a great assortment of tunes to dance to from all decades. As the evening progressed, re-aquaintences were made, tons of pictures were snapped and the Class Decade Photos were taken on the ballroom staircase.

Small Panther Page & Frame

Scrapping on the Spot was invited to the event to take photos during the night and to sell Panther Pages, frames and offer individual photos.  Our cameras were ready for anything — serious poses as well as fun photos with the use of our hats, oversized glasses and other fun things from our Fun Tub.

McHenry Chamber Scrambler

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

A Scrambler almost sounds like an omlet you’d have for breakfast, right?  Well, many networking groups are using this term to describe networking meetings with all types of industries.  What they do is invite a complimentary blend of businesses together for breakfast or lunch, and give them the opportunity of exchanging business cards and making new contacts with each other.

When food is involved, you’ll generally have a 3 course meal — you sit at a different assigned table for each course and are then given a 3 minute opportunity to introduce yourself to your table and describe your services.  Read More→

Scrapping Newbie?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Are you a Scrapbook Newbie?

If you’ve been in the scrapbooking section of a larger store, or have gone to a store that deals exclusively in scrapbooking materials and tools, you are no doubt confused about where to start.  There are too many choices !!!

So where should you start?

The first place to start is by picking up a few core tools that are used for almost all scrapbooking projects.  Here are a few suggestions:

Paper Trimmer Even the most simplest paper trimmers will allow you measure your paper to an exact size and trim it with a nice straight cut.  You may not realize it now, but this tool will be used almost constantly, so it’s a good idea to choose one that will withstand the use. There are just a few trimmers on the market to choose from — please note that styles may vary based on the store you visit:
Straight-edge Rotary Guillotine
Very portable and economical.  They have a pointed sliding blade for a nice neat cut.  Most of them will have a slide out ruler-bar to help with measuring. How to use: Lift up the plastic guide, position your paper to where you want to trim, lay the plastic guide down, then slide the blade along the paper. Also portable and very similar to a Straight Edge trimmer.   Uses a circular blade for cutting paper with a straight edge. Has other blades that provide decorative edging. How to use: Position your paper, push down on the blade and slide it across the paper.    Larger and less portable than the Straight Edge and Rotary trimmers.  Cuts paper in one downward motion and gives your paper a crisp and cleanly cut edge. How to use: Lift the blade handle, position your paper on the measuring grid, hold paper in place with one hand, then bring the blade handle down with the other to cut your paper.

Glues and Adhesives

The next step is to choose the types of glue or adhesive you’ll use.  There are a variety of glues and adhesives to use, and the ones you choose should be ones that will work with your first projects.   Here’s a starter list — please keep in mind that there are several more types of adhesives, but these should get you started:

Dry Adhesives Best uses: Paper or photosGlides on smoothly and doesn’t buckle or wrinkle your paper. The Dotto and Vellum adhesives also come in permanent or temporary glue power.

Dotto Adhesive Mounting squares Vellum Adhesive runner Tape Runner

Wet Adhesives Best uses: Larger paper selections and bulky, hard to work with piecesAbility to move and position paper into place before permanently drying.
